Attar vs Perfume : The Basic Difference

By IttarStore 13/06/2022

The word ‘Attar’ or ‘Ittar’ comes from an ancient Persian word ‘attar’, ‘otto’ or ‘ottar’, that means perfume, fragrance or scent. Manufacturing of Attar fragrance oils is the practice of extracting fragrance from flowers, herbs and other botanical sources and some are from wood sources.

Perfume is made out of a combination of fragrance oils, alcohol, and fixatives. Hungary water was most likely the first alcoholic perfume.

Making Process

Attars are made from Sandalwood oil using a classic hydro-distillation procedure. Perfumes are created using attars or essential oils, alongside some other perfume ingredients/synthetic molecules and alcohol.

You get pure perfume oil minus additives like alcohol

Attar perfumes are concentrated natural smells in the form of base oil produced from plant sources whereas Perfumes are usually sold in spray form since they include alcohol.

When perfumes are blended with air or water, they contaminate the air we breathe and our seas, whereas attars are biodegradable and more environmentally friendly. The negative consequences of synthetic fragrances have been thoroughly examined here.

Natural Vs Synthetic

Attars are created from scents of flowers that are more pleasant to our senses, such whereas Perfumes are made up of chemicals that might be damaging to our skin and general health in some cases.
